The EPA regulates 104 toxic contaminants and is considering listing another 116 chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and biologicals. Chromium-6, popularized by Erin Brockovich, is not on either list. Credible watchdog groups say the number of contaminants on these lists should be as high as 2,200. Water districts are mandated to keep contaminants below certain levels, but often fail. Many people rely on carbon filters for protection. They simply can’t do the job. And bottled water and reverse osmosis have their issues, too.

For ease, contaminants can be remembered by the A, B, C’s below. Each specific contaminant in the broad groups below has a direct health impact as published by the EPA. You owe it to yourself to see the EPA’s full list of health impacts.
A = Aesthetics: Unpleasant taste, look & odors caused primarily by disinfectants added to water like chlorine, chloramines, dirt, etc.
B = Biological: pathogens such as cryptosporidium, E.coli, giardia & other cysts and spores, and organisms.
C = Chemical: Toxic chemicals like pharmaceuticals, fluoride, detergents, PCBs, agricultural and industrial wastes, volatile organic compounds and more..
R = Radioactive: Radioactive contamination comes from naturally occurring radionuclides in the soil that water moves through (radium, uranium, and the radioactive gas radon), and contamination from man-made sources.
D = Dissolved Solids: Heavy metals such as arsenic, aluminum, asbestos, copper, lead, mercury, chromium 6 and others.
